Half timbered houses are some of the most beautiful and unusual looking buildings that you’ll see in the UK which is why we at Crown Journey love them so much. These medieval buildings are instantly recognisable and visually striking with dark wooden timber contrasting against the paler material.

Built using oak, an English tree that was widely available and provided strength, and ‘wattle and daub’ material which was usually smaller branches covered with thick clay mud, bricks or plaster, to fill in between  beams, these were impressive buildings both then and now.

Far from being just a museum to look at, or a building to take a photo of before walking on, they are actually integrated into everyday modern UK life as shops, restaurants and even hotels and guest houses. They are also strongly protected by law meaning that they can only be maintained and not changed or adapted. Their slightly uneven flooring, ceilings being at differing heights and the total absence of elevators and air conditioning is truly what gives them their distinctiveness and unique charm.

Can you imagine what it might be like to actually spend a night in such an incredible historic building instead of a standard chain hotel? These memorable experiences are very much part of the Crown Journey DNA and we would love to introduce you in person.
